Referees Take Control of Their Own Pathway at Junior State Cup

While the Junior State Cup is renowned for showcasing Queensland’s emerging touch football talent, it also serves as one of the most important development opportunities for the next generation of referees.

Across the event, referees were challenged to officiate high-quality matches, receive feedback from experienced coaches and demonstrate their ability under pressure. For many, the tournament represents an important step along the referee pathway, with opportunities for progression determined not by team success, but by individual commitment and performance.

Queensland Touch Football Performance and Pathways Manager Tristan Mana said refereeing offers a unique opportunity within the sport.

“Success is based on your commitment to being a referee,” Mana said.

“Refereeing is the one environment you are absolutely in control of. It’s not about your affiliate performance, it’s your commitment to being a referee.

“No matter if your affiliate performs well, as a referee you can always be in a grand final from your commitment.

“For a keen referee, the only thing stopping you is you.”

Mana said the referee pathway provides opportunities for anyone willing to invest in their development, with hard work, coachability and dedication rewarded throughout the season.

The Junior State Cup also provides an opportunity to recognise officials who have excelled throughout the tournament, with four referees acknowledged for their outstanding performances and potential.

Referees are the backbone of our game. Their willingness to learn, develop and officiate ensures that thousands of young athletes can enjoy the opportunity to compete at Queensland’s premier junior event. Without referees, there simply is no game.

Every whistle blown, every decision made and every match officiated contributes to the success of the event and the experience of players, coaches and spectators alike.

Whether officiating a pool match or a grand final, each referee played an invaluable role in making the 2026 Junior State Cup possible.
